Via Nova School

Speech and Occupational Therapy

Via Nova School has Speech and Occupational Therapists on site. Therapy is mainly focused on foundation and intermediate phases.

Speech-Language therapy at Via Nova School focuses on supporting the development of communication skills of the learners in the school through assessment, evidence-based intervention and collaboration with educators. The speech therapists provide support throughout the school in the form of visual aids, visual schedules and social stories. The total communication approach incorporating all modalities of communication is used in order to ensure effective communication among the school community. Low-and high-tech augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) resources are available. The speech therapists provide both direct and indirect speech therapy in small groups and in the classrooms.

The occupational therapist (OT) plays a crucial role in supporting the learners with autism and intellectual disabilities in the classroom setting. The main role of the OT is to help our learners to develop essential skills that enable them to participate fully in their learning environment and translate this acquisition of skills into activities of daily living such as work and personal management (Life Skills). Via Nova School occupational therapists, through evidence based practice, make use of approaches such as Sensory Integration Therapy to mitigate the sensory processing difficulties prevalent among our learners. Through assessment, intervention and collaboration with educators and parents, our aim is to not only enhance the learner’s educational experience but also their overall quality of life, promoting greater independence and social integration.
